AU2.2 How are Human Activities Amplifying the Greenhouse Effect's Impact on Earth's Systems?

How can We Help?

About Lesson

Duration: 55 minutes

This lesson will dive deeper into the Greenhouse Effect and humans role in generating Greenhouse gases and how these impact different ecosystems and habitats around the world.

Education Goals:

  • To give students a clear understanding of what the Greenhouse Effect is and how humans contribute to it
  • To have students understand how the Greenhouse Effect impacts different ecosystems
  • To enable them to make predications about what they will the future of these ecosystems will in the face of climate change

Materials:

  • Climate Zones worksheet
  • Presentation
  • The Greenhouse Effect video

Preparations:

  • Make sure you have access to internet to play the YouTube video
  • Have your worksheets printed and ready, with spare paper for them to answer the questions and make predictions

  • Begin with a recap of the previous lesson's experiment
  • Introduce the idea of the atmosphere and watch the Greenhouse Effect video

Key questions:

  • What do you rember about our experiment?
  • If the jars are like planet Earth, what might it tell us about what is happening to our climate?

  • Ask the students about the energy they use in their everyday lives
  • Go through the presentation slides and identify the different kinds of energy we as humans use everyday
  • Reiterate the effects of the Greenhouse Effect and it's links to energy use

Key Questions:

  • Can you think of some things that use energy that we use everyday?
  • What different sources of energy can you see in the pictures?

  • Show the students the climate zone map and elicit the idea that different parts of the world have different climates and that means that different habitats exist in different places
  • Group students and handout the climate zone worksheets, students should discuss in groups and answer questions (*)

(*) note that the worksheets have 2 different levels of difficulty. 1 Turtle = accessible to all learners, 2 Turtles = more advanced for learners

Key Questions:

  • Can you explain what might happen to animals and plants is the Earth gets warmer?
  • What could you say about each ‘climate zone’?
  • Which will be warmer or colder, and why do you think that is the case?

  • Quickfire of different habitats and ecosystems on presentation
  • Ask the students which climate zone they might be in and what might happen in a warmer world?
  • Conclude by asking them to think about their response to this knowledge - thoughts, feelings and actions

Key Questions:

  • What questions did this lesson make you THINK of?
  • How do you FEEL after learning about this?
  • What does this lesson make you want to DO?
