How can We Help?

About Lesson

Duration: 55 minutes

This lesson brings together what students have learned about the difference between climate and weather and how climate change is impacting ecosystems, focusing solely on how these things might impact to the Cayman Islands. This lesson contains video resources with members of the Cayman Islands Weather Service.

Educational Goals:

  • Students will learn how cliamte change is affect the Cayman Islands
  • They will consider how climate and weather could effect then as a result of climate change

Materials:

  • Laptops/ screens for playing resource videos
  • Facts sheets per station
  • Lesson worksheet
  • Presentation and notes

Preparation:

  • It is recommeded that you have connection to wifi and have worksheets and fact sheets printed off in advance
  • Set up the stations for students with a screen at each station
  • Read through the teacher fact sheet and presentation notes

  • Before the lesson, set up 4 stations in the classroom, each focusing on a different aspect of climate change: Atmospheric Temperatures, Everyday Weather, Seasonal Weather and Extreme Weather.
  • Introduce the topic briefly and link to previous knowledge from T1 and T2.

  • Break students up into smaller groups, assign them to a station and provide them with a worksheet to carry with them from station to station throughout the lesson.
  • Using the facts sheets and resources at each station prompt the students to observe and record the effects of climate change on their station’s topic e.g. extreme weather. They can record their findings through writing or drawing. See leveled worksheet options.
  • Rotate the groups to the next station after a set amount of time (e.g., 5-7 mins) and repeat until they have interacted with each station.
  • Interact with the students at each station before they leave and encourage them to leave a question or statement or concern at each station.
  • You could model the first station with the whole class first and then send them off.
  • Check in between stations, mini plenary, check for understanding.

  • Conclude the lesson by asking students to review the differences they found between each station and share some. Think pair share, come up with 3 things, 3 statements and 3 questions.
  • Ask them to think about how climate change could impact their everyday lives through one of the aspects

  • If time permits, conclude the activity by having students create a drawing that depicts the impact of weather and climate change on the Cayman Islands, showcasing the observed effects.
